Stephen Golec, 80, of Perth Amboy, passed away on October 20, 2020 at Deborah Hospital in Browns Mills, NJ.
Stephen was a former member of the United States Air Force. After being honorably discharged, he settled in the City of Perth Amboy where he was born and raised.
He joined the Perth Amboy Paid Fire Department in the early 60s until 1976. He also donated his time and served in the Perth Amboy Volunteer Fire Department and the Perth Amboy Volunteer First Aid Squad.
He was an active member of the Holy Trinity Church, the Holy Name Society, and sat on many boards of the Parish. He was proud of his Slovak heritage and enjoyed cooking traditional foods, especially during the holiday season.
In 1976, he changed his focus to politics and became Chief of Staff to Mayor George Otlowski, having also served as an aide to then Assemblyman Otlowski. During his tenure as Chief of Staff, Stephen was involved in bringing the Raritan Valley Steel Works to the old Anaconda Copper Refinery site. He was also involved in the daily operations of the City of Perth Amboy. During the summer, he was always out checking parks and making sure the town was clean. During the winter, Stephen was out with the Public Works Department ensuring that roads were plowed, salted, and safe for the residents of his city. Stephen was just a phone call away and would always help any one that was in need.
Upon retiring, he still was active in politics and worked on many political campaigns. Once he totally retired from politics, he spent time gardening and traveling to his property in Upstate NY. He remained involved with the volunteer fire department, but Perth Amboy always remained his home.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen Golec.
Stephen is survived by his 3 children; Barbara Foley, Stephen Golec III and Kevin Golec; his grandchildren, Stephen Golec IV and Brooke Golec; his siblings, Maryann Skerchek, Caroline Golec and Lawrence Golec; nieces and nephews; Denise Skerchek, John Skerchek, Pamela Golec and Lawrence Golec Jr.
