Joan M. Volanin began her story on April 19, 1943, when she was born in Perth Amboy, NJ, and her final chapter was written on January 31, 2021. Although a lifelong resident of Perth Amboy, she traveled the world; however Long Beach Island, NJ, seemed to be where she enjoyed spending most of her time. Joan graduated PAHS in 1961, followed by graduating from Glassboro State College and Newark State College, after her academic career she began her career as an elementary teacher with the Sayreville, NJ, school district. Students and parents adored her, just as most who encountered her did.
Despite having lost childhood summers due to Polio complications, she went on to live an active life which included: skiing, both on snow and water, traveling, dancing, and enjoying the Jersey shore. In addition to these activities she was an active member in the Women’s Auxiliary at Raritan Bay Medical Center, a lifelong sorority sister to Alpha Delta Kappa, a devoted parishioner at Saint Stephen’s Roman Catholic Church and Altar Rosary Society member, as well as having a generous heart which was evident through the numerous organizations she supported.
Joan, or Joannie as many of us called her, was never without a book, she frequently read several books a week, most borrowed from her beloved local libraries. Her love of literature wasn’t the only passion she had, she loved her dog, Daisy, together they were two ladies who brought joy and smiles to anyone they encountered.
This fun loving, caring, compassionate, and beloved friend and family member will be greatly missed by her family, which includes: her brother John P. Volanin, Jr., sister Carol Ann Volanin Bilas, nephew Jeremiah Bilas, his wife Gloria Bilas, and their daughter Opulus Bilas, as well as her niece Justine Bilas Dworkin, her husband Steve Dworkin, and their son Jetty Dworkin.
